For a Swiss resident, it's probably the best environment in Europe to buy and hold bitcoins.
This guide condenses what you need to know in 2026: where to buy in CHF, how to pay (Twint, transfer, ATM), where to find ATMs, and above all how to properly declare your bitcoins to the tax authorities, canton by canton.
The 100 % Swiss platforms
Four local players dominate the Swiss market in 2026. All are FINMAFINMASwiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. Frames crypto activities in Switzerland.See in the lexicon →-regulated or affiliated with a supervisory body (VQF, SO-FIT) and accept native CHF payments.
Bity (Neuchâtel, founded 2014) offers a genuine crypto-bank: client account with a personal Swiss IBAN, CHF purchase via transfer or Twint, automatic scheduled withdrawal to your own walletWalletSoftware or device that manages your Bitcoin keys and lets you sign transactions. A wallet does not really « hold » your bitcoins, it holds the keys that prove you own them.See in the lexicon →, support in French, German, Italian and English. Fees 1.4 to 2.5 % depending on volume. Bity also operates a large network of Lamassu Bitcoin ATMs across French- and German-speaking Switzerland.
Relai (Zug, founded 2020) has become the European reference for Bitcoin-only DCADCA (Dollar Cost Averaging)Buying a small fixed amount at regular intervals (for example 100 EUR a week), regardless of price. SwissBorg (Lausanne, founded 2017) is more a crypto fintech than a Bitcoin-only platform. Multi-asset, polished mobile app, tokenised loyalty programme. Relevant if you want to diversify beyond Bitcoin.
For 90 % of Swiss residents wanting a simple journey, Bity or Relai cover the essentials.
Pan-European platforms accessible from Switzerland

Among the lowest fees on the market (0.16 to 0.26 % on the Pro interface). Recommended for purchases above 1,000 CHF.
- Bitstamp accepts Swiss customers, SEPA transfer possible, fees 0 to 0.5 %. Good choice for long-term holdings.
- Bitpanda accepts Swiss residents, interface in 4 languages, but fees around 1.49 %. Relevant for those who want to diversify beyond Bitcoin.
- Coinbase is accessible, very polished interface, but prefer the Advanced Trade interface to cut fees.
To avoid in Switzerland: platforms based in offshore jurisdictions (Seychelles, Bahamas), even if they accept you. No practical recourse from Switzerland if something goes wrong.
Special case of foreign crypto neobanks (Revolut, N26, Wise): they often allow Bitcoin purchases but don't give you the keys, so you can't withdraw to a walletWalletSoftware or device that manages your Bitcoin keys and lets you sign transactions. A wallet does not really « hold » your bitcoins, it holds the keys that prove you own them.See in the lexicon →. Treat it as an investment, not as real Bitcoin ownership.
Paying in CHF: Twint, transfer, card
Switzerland is fortunate to offer varied and instant payment methods. Here's the 2026 landscape:
- Twint. The preferred payment method of the Swiss. Accepted by Bity, Pocket Bitcoin and most Lamassu ATMs. Typical limit 5,000 CHF per day depending on your issuing bank. Instant purchase, Twint fees included in the platform spread. Convenient for small amounts.
- CHF bank transfer (IBAN). The cheapest, but 1 to 2 business days. Recommended for purchases above 1,000 CHF. PostFinance, UBS, Raiffeisen, BCV, Migros Bank and most cantonal banks accept transfers to Bity, Relai and EU exchanges without issue.
- Debit or credit card. Accepted by Bity and most pan-European exchanges. Higher fees (2 to 3.5 %) due to intermediaries. Avoid credit card: some banks refuse crypto purchases, and using credit to buy Bitcoin is a bad idea on principle.
- SEPASEPA (Single Euro Payments Area)Single euro payments area: standardised bank transfers, free or nearly so, within one business day (a few seconds for the instant version). The cheapest deposit method on European exchanges.See in the lexicon → in EUR. Compatible but requires your Swiss bank to accept outgoing SEPA payments (most do, sometimes with a small fee). Convenient for Kraken, Bitstamp, Bitpanda. Mind the CHF/EUR exchangeExchangeService that lets you buy, sell and swap cryptocurrencies against fiat money. - Cash via Bitcoin ATMBitcoin ATM (BTM)Automated teller machine where you can buy (and sometimes sell) bitcoin against cash. Often subject to KYC from 1,000 EUR upwards.See in the lexicon →. See next section.
Tip: for recurring buys, setting up a CHF standing order from your bank to Relai or Bity avoids both card fees and the psychological hesitation in front of volatility.
Bitcoin ATMs in Switzerland: a dense network
Switzerland counts more than 100 Bitcoin ATMs in 2026, one of the highest densities per capita in the world. Three main operators share the market:
- Värdex / Bity Lamassu: the densest network, present in most SBB train stations (Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Zurich, Basel, LuganoLugano (Plan ₿)Swiss city that launched a Bitcoin adoption programme in 2022 (tax payments, shops, events). Swiss Bitcoin taxation: wealth tax, but no private capital gains tax
Good news for private holders: Switzerland does not tax private capital gains on Bitcoin sales, provided you're considered a private investor and not a professional securities trader.
Three obligations remain:
- Wealth declaration on 31 December. You report the value of your bitcoins at the official rate published each year by the FTA (Federal Tax Administration). For 2026, the 31 Dec rate is published around January of the following year. This wealth enters the calculation of cantonal and communal wealth tax (Vermögenssteuer), which ranges from 0 to about 0.75 % depending on the canton.
- Income declaration. Personal miningMiningProcess of validating blocks through proof of work. Consumes electricity by design : that is what secures the network.See in the lexicon →, stakingStakingLocking tokens to secure a proof-of-stake blockchain in exchange for a yield. Does not exist on Bitcoin, which relies on proof of work; tax-wise, staking income follows its own rules.See in the lexicon → rewards, and interest on crypto loans are taxable as income at the ordinary rate. Passive holding generates no taxable income.
- "Professional trader" status. If you trade actively (high volume, short term, leverage, buying on credit), the administration may reclassify you as a professional trader, which makes your gains taxable as income and triggers AHV contributions. The 5 criteria of FTA Circular 36 are the reference to know if you're active.

Cantonal specificities to know
Wealth tax and the interpretation of the "professional trader" status vary noticeably from one canton to another. Practical overview for the most populated cantons:
- Zug: one of the lowest wealth tax rates in Switzerland. The municipality of Zug has accepted Bitcoin for tax payments since 2021. Many Bitcoin companies and funds are based there.
- Zurich: average rate, strict but readable enforcement. The canton publishes its own crypto guide every year.
- Geneva: relatively high wealth tax rate, but administration open to crypto and to crypto freelancers' remote work.
- Vaud: intermediate rate, case law on professional reclassification is taking shape. Lausanne hosts several crypto start-ups.
- Ticino: LuganoLugano (Plan ₿)Swiss city that launched a Bitcoin adoption programme in 2022 (tax payments, shops, events). The annual Plan B Forum has become a European fixture.See in the lexicon → accepts Bitcoin for municipal taxes since 2022, very active "Plan B Lugano" programme. Moderate cantonal taxation.
- Valais: low rate, little crypto case law, generally favourable to a passive holder.
For a specific situation (inter-cantonal move, succession, employer paying in bitcoins), request an advance tax ruling from your cantonal tax office. It's free and secures your position for several years.
